Shrub steppe in central Oregon
In the shrub steppe of eastern Oregon, I recognize Elymus lanceolatus by its erect leaves in widely spaced tufts. If you pull one out, you will see that it is connected to the other tufts by long rhizomes under the sand.
In the shrub steppe and juniper woodlands of eastern Oregon, I recognize Thurber's needlegrass (Eriocoma thurberiana, formerly Achnatherum thurberianum) by its fine curly leaves and bunch habit.
